about

In 1960, Harry Bertoia created the first of his many Sonambient sound sculptures, tall cattail-like structures producing haunting metallic rings. Sonambient: Chapters was a sound art installation that used poetry and music, integrated with the naturally occurring sounds of Oberlin's Arboretum, to create a dreamlike soundscape informed by Bertoia’s work. Via radio, listeners tuned in to the installation on a walk around a pond, discovering the four movements of the composition and corresponding chapters of a visual poem. While allowing listeners to choose their own pace of exploration, the musical and geographical framework of the piece formed a structured experience crafted to elicit a sense of self-reflection and tranquility.
